For my birthday this year, Marcus scheduled a photo shoot for the two of us, since we don’t have any pictures of us around the house. We were originally going to do it the weekend of my birthday, but weather had other ideas so we ended up doing it the day after Valentine’s Day.
We went out to a park near 35th and Exposition where there are tons of peacocks roaming around. Did anyone else know this place existed? It was surreal to walk around with these giant exotic birds everywhere. We met Sam Marx and his girlfriend and took some shots all throughout the park. Here are a few of my favorites:

I like photographs, specifically because of the peculiar way they freeze moments in time. All records are designed to do that in one way or another, but I think that photographs are ideal for that. These in particular are lovely, except that you and Marcus are too far away in some of them. Now I’m wondering if that was the photographer’s intent, a bit like the Breughel painting in which the small splash of Icarus hitting the water is off in the corner. Now that would make an interesting photo: This heavily wooded, mysterious park that looks like it belongs in a book of fairy tales, with you and Marcus occupying a small, easy-to-miss space on one side.
OK, enough of that. I’m happy for you.

Scott –
Interesting observations. I’m said photographer. I do like to make the background part of the photograph. It’s easy to take a picture of someone, following general principles of portraiture. I like getting people to interact with their backgrounds. I don’t even really like to think of it as a “background” though. In a photograph, it’s all two dimensional. Light and shadow tell our eyes what’s important and what’s not. I particularly like contrasting the clean with the dirty. I’m fairly selective about the location. I offered up this location, as I thought it provided some interesting texture to go with Marcus and Elli. I did very much picture the fairy tale “walking through the dark woods” scene when I was shooting some of these.
Thanks for the feedback! I had a blast working with these two lovely folks!
